Any true cupcake lover knows that the cake to icing ratio must be perfect, lest the whole eating experience falls unceremoniously on its face. Luckily for Charleston, we have Sugar Bakeshop, which has mastered a cupcake who’s icing spends less time on your nose and fingers and more time in your mouth—where it belongs!

Owners, David Bouffard and Bill Bowick founded Sugar Bakeshop, located at 59 ½ Cannon Street, in the fall of 2007. It was Bill who always possessed a passion for baking. In fact, the yellow cake mix that Sugar uses is his grandmother’s recipe, and we thank her for it! David’s love affair with their baked goods perhaps started after their first batch of almond chocolate coconut cupcakes (his favorite) came fresh out of the oven. Few can resist that temptation and there is no judgment here. But not only are these two talented, they are gracious and love to get to know their customers, so do not be shy. Say hello!

Take a look at their menu because Sugar does more than scrumptious cupcakes; they bake cookies including ginger molasses, M&M, and Butterscotch as well as tackling cakes. Did I mention that they use local ingredients? It would be negligent of me not to mention that since Sugar’s conception, David, Bill and their wonderful staff have been bringing more than just savory sweets to our city. They have aligned themselves with local non-profit organizations like Cycles Compost Charleston, The Neighborhood House and My Sister’s House, donating their goods to those who need something special most. It is because of their delightful product and their community involvement that I believe Sugar Bakeshop is one of the best local businesses in Charleston. I encourage those new and old to the Holy City to stop in and get to know your neighbors at Sugar Bakeshop. I guarantee they will put a smile on your face.
